Salmaan Toor, Ph.D.

Dr. Salmaan Toor earned a B.A. in Psychology at the University of Tennessee in 2000. After graduation, he gained valuable experience working at an inpatient facility with children, adolescents, and adults. From there he transitioned to working with adults for a community agency. Following one year stints in those positions, he was accepted to the master's experimental psychology (M.A.) program at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, VA. There he honed his skills in teaching and research, but he genuinely missed working with people in a clinical setting.

Following the completion of his M.A. degree, he was accepted into the clinical psychology doctoral program (Ph.D.) at the University of Tennessee. Here, he gained invaluable experience and training in how to work with children, adolescents, and adults. After completing his doctoral degree, he completed a one-year internship at River Valley Services in Middletown, CT. Following his internship, he joined The Family Center, a group private practice in northern Virginia for his postdoctoral training. He remained there as a licensed clinical psychologist for 3 years before relocating to Knoxville in 2012. Most consider Dr. Toor a child psychologist since he predominantly works with children and families; however, he does see adults as well as couples on a regular basis.

Ten Questions:

    1.    What was your first real job?:

Teaching basketball at a summer camp when I was in high school. Actually fueled my interest in psychology.

    2.     What has been your favorite book and why?:

I Know This Much is True by Wally Lamb. Very well written story about two twins, one with a mental illness. Almost 1000 pages but was a page flipper. Felt like a couple books in one. Highly recommend!

    3.     How do you describe your sense of humor?:

Inappropriate at times, but within normal limits most of the time :) Think Dave Chappelle.

    4.     What's your current focus in your work?:

Not drowning with the massive demand for mental health services. Finding that balance. Working in private practice with most age groups

    5.      What kind of patient would you like to see more?:

The patient that comes in and says "I'm doing great, just want to explore why that is!"

    6.       What would you like KAPA to provide in the future?:

KAPA is doing great, thanks to all that make this machine run smoothly. If you twisted my arm, maybe more kid centric themes in CE talks.

    7.       What guilty pleasure can you not live without?:

    All things peanut butter.

    8.       Name two people who have inspired you?:

My parents, Kobe Bryant, and my patients!

    9.      What is a common point of frustration in your current work?:

    Insurance companies are the devil.

    10.      What’s one thing - either psychology related or not - you learned in the last month?:

That parakeets get really cranky if you keep the lights on past their bedtime (my daughter just got two parakeets a few months ago).
