PSYPACT Explained: An Overview of the Psychology Interjurisdictional Compact

Summary:

In an era of rapidly evolving technology, telepsychology has become an indispensable tool for expanding access to behavioral health services. However, this transformative modality brings with it a complex web of legal, ethical, and regulatory considerations that demand careful attention. This presentation will provide an in-depth overview of the Psychology Interjurisdictional Compact (PSYPACT) and its implications for psychological practice in Tennessee. Attendees will gain a comprehensive understanding of PSYPACT's structure, its benefits for practitioners and clients, and the regulatory considerations for cross-state telepsychology and temporary in-person practice. The session will highlight recent developments, practical steps for Tennessee psychologists to participate in PSYPACT, and strategies to maximize the opportunities PSYPACT offers. Ample time will be allotted for discussion of common challenges, ethical considerations, and attendee questions.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

discuss the implications of cross-jurisdictional practice, including what an interstate compact is (and one example of a compact),
describe PSYPACT and two things that it allows psychologists to do to ethically and legally practice according to regulations, and what the governing documents for PSYPACT are, and where to locate them, and
explain the potential consequences of non-compliance with legal and ethical standards in telepsychology, including disciplinary actions, risk of enforcement, and other penalties (e.g., audits, investigations).

Target Audience:

This program is open to all KAPA members and other interested mental health professionals who are not members. The content of this presentation is appropriate for mental health professionals educated at the graduate level in psychology, psychiatry, or other mental health related disciplines, as well as graduate students in a mental health related discipline.

Instructional Level:

The material will be appropriate to intermediate levels of practice and knowledge.

Continuing Education:

This program - when attended in its entirety - is available for 1.5 APA approved continuing education credits. With full attendance and completion of a Program Evaluation and Learning Assessment, a certificate will be issued. Partial credit will not be awarded. Participant's attendance will be verified via their Zoom login name and sign in / sign off time. Please assure that you are identifiable by your Zoom login name.

American Psychological Association Approval Statement:

The Knoxville Area Psychological Association (KAPA) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for Psychologists. KAPA maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

If you are a member of KAPA, then this program is free of charge. If you are not a member of KAPA and you do not want CE credit, this program is free of charge.

Speaker Information:

Janet Orwig, MBA, CAE, has served as the executive director of the Psychology Interjurisdictional Compact (PSYPACT) since 2015. In this role, she supports the Compact’s governing body, the PSYPACT Commission. Janet manages PSYPACT’s day-to-day operations, including implementing compact and regulatory compliance. She plays an integral role in developing new services and programs, securing and managing large government grants, and strengthening stakeholder relations. Her 30-year career in association management spans customer service, communications, public relations, advocacy, strategic planning and implementation, leadership development, and project and program management. Janet earned her Paralegal Certificate and undergraduate degree from Huntingdon College and her Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Phoenix. She is also a Certified Association Executive (CAE).
