Issues and Updates on Tennessee Laws and Rules That Govern the Practice of Psychology

This program is designed to meet the requirement for psychologists licensed in the state of Tennessee to obtain continuing education in ethics and the law, including the requirement to obtain continuing education on Tennessee State Law.

Summary:

In this presentation, relevant rules and statutes for psychologists in Tennessee will be addressed. In the last legislative session, two statutes relevant to psychology practice were passed, both with emergency rule making hearings.  This means that both will go into effect in January of 2024. One statute creates a new licensing category for psychological testing technicians. The other statute makes the path for licensure easier for out of state psychologists with ten or more years of experience. These statutes and rules will be reviewed in detail. Dr. Auble will talk briefly about the new telepsychology rules (in effect in 2022) and their relationship to APA Guidelines for Telepsychology. The Board of Examiners has voted to have CE Broker as a means for CE Audits, and she will explain what this involves for licensees. Dr. Auble will talk about possible new CE Rules for Certified Psychological Assistants and if time permits, review the CE rules.

Learning Objectives:   

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

1) apply information about updates to the licensing statutes which now include a new licensing category (psychological testing technician) and a new path to licensure for senior psychologists and

2) apply the TN Rules on telepsychology and continuing education to ensure compliance for licensees and prepare for future CE audits using CE Broker.

Target Audience: 

This program is open to all KAPA members and other interested mental health professionals who are not members. The content of this presentation is appropriate for mental health professionals educated at the graduate level in psychology, psychiatry, or other mental health related disciplines, as well as graduate students in a mental health related discipline.

Instructional Level:

The material will be appropriate to intermediate levels of practice and knowledge.

Continuing Education:

This program - when attended in its entirety - is available for 1.5 APA approved continuing education credits. With full attendance and completion of a Program Evaluation and Learning Assessment, a certificate will be issued. Partial credit will not be awarded. Participant's attendance will be verified via their Zoom login name and sign in / sign off time. Please assure that you are identifiable by your Zoom login name.

American Psychological Association Approval Statement:

The Knoxville Area Psychological Association (KAPA) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for Psychologists. KAPA maintains responsibility for this program and its content. 

There is no commercial support for this program, nor are there any relationships between the CE Sponsor, presenting organization, program content, research, grants, or other funding sources that could reasonably be construed as conflicts of interest. During the program, the validity/utility of the content and risk/limitations of their approaches will be addressed.

Speaker Information:

Dr. Auble is a forensic clinical neuropsychologist who is board certified by ABPP.  Her work is at the intersection of the law and psychology, so that the statutes and rules which govern psychology practice in Tennessee are naturally fascinating to her.  She was a practicing psychologist representative on the Tennessee Board of Examiners from 2009-2015.  Since 2017, she has been the Board of Examiners’ liaison from TPA.  In 2021, Dr. Auble became Director of Professional Affairs for TPA.
