Effective Treatment of Perinatal and Postpartum OCD

Caitlin Clevenger, PhD

Psychotherapy Services of Alabama

Summary:

Perinatal people (or people who are trying to get pregnant, are pregnant, or are postpartum) are at 1.5-2 times higher risk for obsessive-compulsive disorder compared to their peers. Obsessive-compulsive disorder can be a debilitating condition, and if left untreated, can result in significant consequences for both the parent and the infant. This presentation will inform psychologists of the prevalence and consequences of this disorder in the perinatal period, describe diagnostic criteria and methods for screening, and provide an overview of evidence-based interventions for OCD for perinatal people.
